The Fact of Contact: African American Art and Civil Rights

Program content by
Ronald Dorris,Ph.D.

Examines the depiction of social and political secular themes through the medium of art. The art works serve as the fact of contact which convey the common theme, the search for inclusion and equality, in the civil rights period, 1954-1970. The medium is presented in context with the material , popular , regional and intellectual cultural ideas and influences which existed at the time of its creation. Analytical and evaluative questions encourage students to construct their own interpretations. Students will view various works of art and align for analysis with descriptions of political and social events for a respective year.
