GIF Transparency

Pixels in a GIF can be designated as transparent, allowing
the background of the page to show through.

Pixels in a GIF image are either transparent or not.
Degrees of transparency are not possible.
Thus, a common pitfall of GIF transparency is the dreaded "fringe" effect.
