political event:

John F. Kennedy assassinated in November 1963


social events:

May 1963 Medgar Evers, NAACP Field Secretary in Mississippi assassinated in the driveway of his home in Jackson, MS.

August 1963 the historic March on Washington whereby thousands of protesters marched to demand sweeping civil rights legislation. Announcement of the death of W.E.B. DuBois in Accra, Ghana was made at the March on Washington ceremony.

September 15, 1963 four African American girls (Addie Mae Collins, Carol Robertson, Carol D. McNair, and Cynthia Wesley) were killed when segregationists bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL.


drama:

In 1961 Ossie Davis starred in his own satirical play Purlie Victorious. The co-star was Davis' wife, actress Ruby Dee.

Sidney Poitier wins an Oscar for best actor in 1963 for his portrayal in the film Lilies in the Field.

Tambourines to Glory by Langston Hughes and Funny House of a Negro by Adrienne Kennedy presented in 1963.

In The Cardinal (1963) Ossie Davis travels to Rome to to enlist the aid of the Pope in desegregating a Catholic school in Georgia.

Gone are the Days (1963) the screen version of Ossie Davis' stage drama Purlie Victorious. All major characters are deliberate stereotypes, a ploy used by Davis as a method of social criticism.
