Using del.icio.us

So now we get to the heart of the matter.

Creating Bookmarks

  1. Go to any webpage that you visit frequently.
  2. Click the "Post to del.icio.us" button that you just installed in the last step. (If you opted to install the extensions or plugins you'll want to click the "Tag" button instead.)

You will be presented with a form. The form has four fields, and two should be pre-filled. But let's consider each in turn.

  1. url: This is the web address. It should look something like http://www.example.com/ and you probably don't need to edit it. However, occasionally you'll see some long address like http://www.classicaccents.net/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=CAI when you really just wanted to bookmark http://www.classicaccents.net/
You're certainly welcome to delete the extra "cruft."
  2. description: This is taken from the title of the web page. Sometimes it's good as is, and sometimes not, depending on whether the web page was created with a decent title. For example, this page has a title of "TAheat." A better title might be "Teacher Activities: Heat Experiments." Feel free to change what appears in this field to be more descriptive.
  3. notes: You can type anything you want here!
  4. tags: This is important. Tags are keywords, metainformation, which you will use to organize your bookmarks. Type as many tags here as you like. They should all be single words, separated by spaces. You can run words together if they form a phrase. For example "sciencefiction" rather than "science" and "fiction." You'll also see "recommended" and "popular" tags at the bottom of the form. Click one and it will be added to the field. For more about using tags, see del.icio.us/help/tags

When you're done, click the "save" button. That's it. You've just saved your first bookmark to del.icio.us. Now go to another webpage and do it again. Then you'll be ready to learn how to access your bookmarks.
