Cultural and Intellectual History

To avoid studying paintings in isolation, each work will be assessed in relation to historical developments that unfolded at the time that particular visual and performing arts piece was being produced. To add an interdisciplinary focus and an interactive mode to the import of this module, corresponding visual and performing arts works produced in other media will be analyzed in relation to the paintings as core pieces to establish additional social and political expression that surfaces and can be studied in relation to developments in United States history.
