New Website

As of January 2002, the Center has a new website with a short and easy URL: cat.xula.edu Note there's no "www" in this address.

Our new site is hosted on a Linux machine supplied by ITC (thanks!) and uses the Apache Web server. The server also uses MySQL (a database program) and PHP (a scripting program).

It's interesting to note that all of these technologies are open source. According to the Free On-line Dictionary of Computing, open source is "a method and philosophy for software licensing and distribution designed to encourage use and improvement of software written by volunteers by ensuring that anyone can copy the source code and modify it freely."

This all adds up to a flexible development environment and a website with sophisticated capabilities. For example, there are now a number of areas on our site which allow for users to contribute content, such as our listing of conferences.

We've also redesigned the site in a more logical fashion. We hope Xavier faculty will find the new site useful and easier to navigate.
