A Prescription for Cultural Competence
by Dr. Fatima Brakta
Intercultural knowledge has become an integral part of pharmacists' daily activities and responsibilities. Pharmacists are increasingly providing care for patients with diverse ethnicities, races, religions, health beliefs, and socieconomic statuses. Pharmacists along with other health care professionals are not sufficiently trained in cultural competence. As a result, many of these minority groups and cultures are facing health disparities. Therefore, educating pharmacy students on cultural competence is paramount. Our students need to understand how insufficient beliefs and false expectations between pharmacists and patients can lead to misinterpretations, errors, and eventually medication-related problems and complications.
