The Development and Implementation of a Geriatric Course
by Dr. Ashley M. Taylor
Essentials of Geriatrics: will be the first course designed to focus on caring for elderly patients in various settings. This course was developed and will be implemented to address multiple NAPLEX competencies as well as Xavier's COP program outcomes and objectives. Students will learn how to assess, recommend, and provide healthcare information as it pertains to geriatric patients. Students also have several opportunities to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills tailored to the needs of audiences in various settings. Students will be exposed to multiple cases involving elder abuse and mistreatment, to allow them to determine what is socially unacceptable. This course will allow both students and faculty to participate in helping solve problems faced by elderly patients in the US today.
