Enhancing Health Information Management Course Curriculum and Instruction Through Service Learning
by Dr. Laura Marie Douresseaux
The aim of this project is to enhance student learning outcomes by actively engaging students, enrolled in the Health Information Management Systems (HIMS) program, in a new way of learning by incorporating service learning into some of the junior and senior level HIMS courses. The specific objectives to achieve this goal are 1) identify HIMS junior and senior level courses to incorporate service learning in a way that will connect the academic course work and a broader appreciation of the discipline with community involvement; 2) design and implement service learning course syllabi; 3) identify community-based health care clinics to develop a collaborative partnership and 4) improve/enhance pilot HIMS service learning course through continued communication with community partner on course objectives, needs of the facility, and the educational experience they can provide. Once courses are identified and syllabi are created, HIMS instructors will partner with community-based health care clinics that can create projects and substantive work for the students that identify the needs of the facility as well as the academic requirements and objectives of the courses. The service learning courses will be designed to provide students with an opportunity for community involvement and promote civic engagement beyond college.
