GET ON MY LEVEL: THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA AN DONLINE COMMUNITIES ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN A SUMMER COURSE

by Dr. Krista Mincey

This project will assess the effectiveness of social media and online communities in the development of student engagement in an online course. The overall objective of this project is to develop six distinct methods on interaction for an online summer course. The outcomes of this project are as follows: By the end of the course, 20% of students will show an active engagement in the course; by the end of the course, 2 of the 6 methods developed will have 50% participation from students. This project will take place during the Summer II 2013 session. The project will take place over four months to include course development, data collection, and evaluation. Understanding what methods are effective in student engagement in online courses provides instructors with knowledge on how to develop and tailor their courses so that they can develop student engagement and interaction similar to their traditional classroom courses.
