PROMOTING DEEP SOCIOLOGICAL READING AND TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING THROUGH ONLINE TEACHING
by Dr. Claire Norris
Higher education has seen a substantial growth in online courses. Online learning has grown exponentially during the first decade of the twenty-first century, During the fall of 2009, 5.6 million students, representing 29% of the total college and university enrollment, took at least one online course (The Sloan Consortium, 2010). Given the rise in online learning, faculty, and administrators must take strategic steps to develop, implement, and assess online course curriculum. Scholars also note that embedding deep reading activities and strategies in college courses are vital to creating opportunities of transformative learning - or meaningful, socially constructed knowledge. Although there is literature that supports the value of deep reading among college students, there is little research that understands how this process operates within online class environments. This project seeks to develop, implement, and assess deep reading and, in turn, enhance transformative learning in an Introduction to Sociology online at Xavier University of LA.
