Interdisciplinary, international Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience
by Dr. Sarah Amering
The objective of this project is to create an interdisciplinary, international advanced pharmacy practice experience for fourth year pharmacy students in La Vallee, Haiti. The students will work collaboratively with many different experienced health professionals to develop care plans for patients of the clinic. Students will be paired to mentor with both Haitian and American physicians and to assist during patient visits throughout the day and will learn about common disease states in Haiti from physicians experienced in the field. In addition, they will educate Haitian and American healthcare providers regarding pharmacotherapy for various diseases common to impoverished nations like Haiti. Students will track their interventions to allow continued improvement in health outcomes for the residents of La Vallee. In addition students will create pre-and post-travel reflections on assigned topics relevant to their interdisciplinary experience based on their experiences while in Haiti. The pharmacy and medical students will evaluate each other's impact on patient care and the medical team in a survey designed for future publication. In summary, this project hopes to expand the cultural and educational bounds of fourth-year pharmacy students here at Xavier University of Louisiana via multiple educational interactions with providers of a variety of health disciplines and nationalities.
