Enhancing Writing Skills for Mass communication Majors: The design of a new learning experience

I propose to determine how best to address the serious verbal deficiencies of MAC majors by teaming up with English faculty through an experimental method or through linking classes. Most of Dillard University's students come from backgrounds in which their English and Language Arts skills were not fully cultivated; as a result, many come to the university with major challenges with verbal skills, especially writing. Assessment over the past three years in selected MAC writing courses have shown little improvement in this area. Having to delve deeply into sentence structure and punctuation while teaching a new writing style (journalism) has proven difficult for faculty.This project could be invaluable as a pilot to test ideas that eventually could be beneficial to the entire body.
