Converting Metabolism into a Flipped Course

by Dr. Kelly Johanson

The incorporation of active learnng opportunities into STEM courses increases student performance and fosters a deeper understanding of the material. CHEM 4140 (Metabolism) is an upper level course that draws on principles of both biology and chemistry to explore the regulation of and connection between metabolic pathways. The course currently has a strong active-learning component, and student response has indicated a need for expansiion of these types of activities. However, limited class time requires that alternative strategies be explored to facilitate these additional opportunities. The conversion to a flipped class model would free up class time for exploring difficult concepts through POGIL activities and case studies. The objectives of this project are to increase the number of problem-solving sessions and to replace all lecture content with videos in a phased system over three semesters. The effectiveness of the active learning sessions will be assessed through data gathered from student answers to open-ended discussion questions answered after each topic. It is expected that data collected from this course conversion will be used to advise others on the use of similar methods in upper level chemistry courses.
