Another FaCTS Mellon Project
A Wiki-Approach to Pharmacy Literature Review
by Dr. Raven Jackson
My proposed project involves the incorporation of Wikipedia article editing as an adjunct to our current journal club requirement fro fourth year pharmacy students on their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Elective (APPE) rotations. Journal clubs are intended for students to review current articles for efficacy and assess the applicability of new advances within the field of pharmacy. The primary objective of this project is to prepare students to take their article critiquing skills to the next level by editing health care information that is directly available to the public sector. In addition to their journal club requirement, students will be required (as a group) to critique one "start" class/high importance article selected by the preceptor for the duration of the 6 week rotation. Students will be oriented to the WikiEdu concept during the first week of rotation, an article will be selected, and they will then be required to work as a group to continue the editing process. As the facilitator, I will assess their progress twice weekly using the WikiEdu dashboard and set aside 2 in-office hours of discussion to ensure that the group is on track. The goal is to have students begin to think about the concept of knowledge and access to information in a way that transcends the classroom setting.
