Making Knowledge Public: A Restructured Spanish for Medical Professionals Course

I propose to restructure an existing course: SPAN 2051 Spanish for Medical Personnel, crucially incorporating instructional technology. The restructured course will begin with a review of Spanish grammar and then emphasize key concepts of medical Spanish.

In the second part of the course, students will create content, in the form of videos, aimed at working professionals who need to gain a certificate or who need to increase their Spanish language skills. There is a great need for this type of instructional content in the community, as there is a growing number of Spanish speakers in the New Orleans area and a lack of translators in hospitals.

Learning objectives and outcomes for this course would include writing skill development, speaking skills development, listening, Media and information literacy, collaboration, teaching, presenting, and online communication.
