Adding Interactive Exercises to Introductory Programming Laboratories

This project will involve the identification, integration, and assessment of appropriate interactive tools and animations in the Drill sections of the Computer Sciences and Computer Engineering Department's Computer Science I and II courses.

UPDATE: Thursday, May 20, 2004
Faculty 'Summer Institue' ended Friday, May 14th. CodeLab Activities for 10 students were created for a Pilot Study this summer. The Pilot study begins Monday, May 24th and will extend through July 30th. Student suggestions from the study will be used to revise (if necessary) activities for use in the Fall.

UPDATE: Wednesday,May 12,2004
Faculty are engaged in a "Summer Institute" Monday, May 10th through Friday, May 14th. Activities include using the CodeLab application and selecting exercises for student drill assignments. Other interactive tools are under consideration for use in computer science courses. Work towards the projects' assessment plan and details for the student pilot study are also underway.

UPDATE: Thursday November 4, 2004
CPSC 1710 faculty have assigned weekly activities for students to complete using the CodeLab application. At the end of the semester students will be asked to assess CodeLab for strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes and willingness to purchase licenses. Students in CPSC 1720 have begun to use Drill exercises developed for each course topic. Student retention data will be analyzed to assess the impact of changes for the Computer Science courses. students in both courses will be observed in drill using an automated code evaluator. Information stored from the program will be used to determne if it was ued as intended.
