Freshening Up Freshman Seminar: Creating an Environment of Expectancy, Excitement and Empowerment

by Dr. Richard Peters

For this specific grant, I propose to reengineer and reconfigure Freshman Semiar (1 & 2). While the course already uses some elements of inverted learning and teaching, course content and delivery will be redesigned to promote both outside and inside classroom activity that will help first year and transfer students gain knowledge about Xavier and social issues while building the necessary skills of critical thinking and social interaction. Specifically assignments and content will be created and enhanced to focus on meaningful classroom discussion and participation. Students will be responsible for significant preparation outside the classroom will directly promote in-classroom learning and development.
