The Contemplative Classroom
How three Xavier faculty have implemented a contemplative pedagogy in their courses.

Last summer, three Xavier faculty attended the Summer Session on Contemplative Pedagogy at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Path

That trip marked the beginning of a new CAT initiative, Sustaining the Dialog, funded in part by a generous grant from the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society. The goals of the initiative include deepening faculty understanding of contemplative pedagogy, sharing expertise with colleagues, and ultimately enhancing student learning experiences.

Upon returning to Xavier, Drs. Kate Eskine (PSYC), Ross Louis (COMM) & Lisa Schulte (PSYC) have implemented a contemplative pedagogy in their courses. Throughout the fall semester, they have met with Bart Everson (CAT) to practice and to discuss teaching and learning from a contemplative perspective.

Your colleagues are now prepared to share this work with you. In this interactive session, each panelist will share a contemplative practice used in a course and discuss the impact of this pedagogy. We'll talk about the benefits and challenges of this approach.

With this session we aim to expand the conversation from last semester to include any and all Xavier faculty who are interested in the topics at hand. We'll be kicking off a weekly morning meditation and discussion series. Details will be shared at the workshop. Please join us.
