RTLT: Critically Reading in the News

Critically Reading the News

Read Today, Lead Tomorrow (RTLT)

Regardless of the discipline, faculty are often challenged to help students apply what they "learn in class" with what is going on in the "real world." Many faculty encourage, cajole, and mandate that their students keep abreast of current events via a myriad of available news resources. Even within the global arena of media literacy education, faculty members struggle with getting their students to understand, appreciate, and make useful application of the news as a way of better understanding their world.

Join us for cutting-edge techniques that may help your students become better critical thinkers and readers of media (or other discipline-specific) texts. Using question construction exercises, as developed by creators of the Tennessee Tech University Critical-thinking Assessment Test (CAT), we will show you how to craft discipline specific analogs that yield higher levels of active reading and critical thinking.
