Fostering Reciprocity in Service Learning
A Roundtable Session

The service part of service learning is generally perceived as actions that help others: things like working in a soup kitchen, tutoring, or planting gardens. But scholar Cynthia Rosenberger of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst wonders if the dynamics involved with "doing good" and "helping others" may in fact work to sustain the hegemony of the elite, in which those in positions of privilege and power name the problems and the solutions for the less privileged. By examining service learning through the lens of Paolo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Rosenberger seeks to deepen the dialogue on the purposes and practices of service learning, and to emerge with a service learning pedagogy that fosters true reciprocity, one in which all stakeholders benefit.

In this session we will examine Rosenberger's main "Freirian" tenets, and discuss how they have been or could be applied to service learning at Xavier.

All are invited, and those with service learning experience are particularly encouraged to participate in this roundtable discussion.
