The Role of Mentors in Remediating Underprepared Students

P-MAX logo

In the United States, anywhere between 40%-60% of first-year college students require remediation in math, English or both. Xavier is not immune to this problem. Because a multitude of factors leads to students' lack of preparedness for post-secondary education, a variety of approaches will be required to combat it. Mentors have a vital role to play in remediating these underprepared students, but they must be prepared to adequately deal with the varied challenges these students bring. We will discuss some ways that mentors can prepare for the underprepared.
