RTLT: Helping Students Connect
Encouraging Engaged Reading
Matt Wallace, Artistic Director of Shakespeare Behind Bars in Louisville, will talk about his work with the renowned Shakespeare program. In an hour-long presentation, he will share program principles, examples, exercises, and tips from his work with incarcerated and at-risk youths and adults. Through performance of Shakespeare's texts and breaking down his approach to the Shakespeare Behind Bars work, he will share methods of guiding participants to make personal connections with a text in this multimedia presentation.
MATT WALLACE is in his fifth year as Artistic Director of Shakespeare Behind Bars and Director/Facilitator of the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex program. He is currently directing the inmate ensemble in Richard III and has directed previous seasons of Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, The Winter's Tale, and Macbeth. He is also Program Director and Facilitator of the SBB Multidiscipline Juvenile Arts Program at the Audubon Youth Development Center in the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice, the SBB Shakespeare Beyond Bars programs at Louisville Day Treatment Center, Home of the Innocents, and Brooklawn Child and Family Service. He recently founded and facilitates the new Journeymen Programs for 18-21 year olds at Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex and Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, a partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education and VSA Kentucky, the state organization on arts and disability.
Matt has also taught with organizations including Children's Theatre of Charlotte, the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts, Bellarmine University Veritas Society, Horse Cave Theatre, Derby Dinner Playhouse, and at many youth facilities including Home of the Innocents, Brooklawn Child and Family Services, and Mary Ryan Academy. He has been judge and respondent for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Illinois Theatre Association, Kentucky Thespian Society, and English Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition.
Matt studied with Second City Chicago and Shakespeare & Company. He holds a BFA in Theatre Performance from the Webster University Conservatory of Theatre Arts in St. Louis.
