Students' Prior Knowledge in Teaching
Bane, Boon, and More Than We Bargained For
Our students are anything but "blank slates" when we meet them in our college courses, but figuring out what to do with their prior knowledge can be a real challenge. In the Sciences, as well as other disciplines, research on students' misconceptions--their unhelpful prior knowledge--shows what a remarkable role these mistaken intuitions can play in learning. This interactive talk will get you thinking in new ways about what students already "know," appreciating key findings from research on student learning, and developing practical teaching strategies to make use of and address students' misconceptions and prior knowledge.
