Another Rich Media Project

The World Inside New Orleans

by Dr. Kathryn Barrett-Gaines

This project will create a comprehensive history course on CD or website that grounds each of twelve major topics of modern world history in a material aspect of the city of New Orleans. The proposal is that much of world history since 1500 can be taught in relation to some aspect of the international and old city of New Orleans. The goal is to link each of the topics, or historical changes, of the course with various aspects of the city of New Orleans, using various types of media to bring New Orleans into the classroom and to send students to insert themselves into the historical processes they are learning about. The project will incorporate visual, aural, moving, and still images of contemporary and historical phenomena in New Orleans. It will create modules of media resources for each of the topics of the course for facile use as a resource for other teachers of the course. These features will address challenges inherent in the current form of the course, with goals for the improvement of student learning of historical skills and materials.
