A Reading Portfolio: English 2010

by Mr. Ralph Adamo

The designated intention of the course is to teach literature from the earliest stone-tablet writing through the Renaissance. This is the last English class required of all students. As is typical at Xavier, they come from a wide array of majors, bringing very different levels of reading and writing skills, not to mention basic interest. I try to use their diversity as a tool to generate interest and to articulate one of the goals of the course as I teach it: the former being the opportunity to have many perspectives represented in discussion, the latter service as an example of the accommodations, compromises and confluences inherent in the active reading process.
