This day-long series of presentations and workshops is designed to welcome new faculty while providing them with tools, resources, and people-contacts to ensure a successful first year.
9:00-9:15: President's Welcome
Dr. Norman C. Francis, President, Xavier University of Louisiana
9:15-11:00: Workshop "Coping in the Classroom: Difficult Personalities and the Role of Immediacy"
Dr. Dominique Gendrin, Dr. Stephanie Thomson, and Dr. Melissa Hopson-Sparks of the Communications Department demonstrate strategies for coping with difficult student behavior. The workshop concludes with a panel discussion that will allow the new faculty to ask existing faculty questions about the teaching and learning culture at Xavier. Faculty from across the disciplines will participate, as well as Mr. Joseph Byrd, Vice President of Student Services, who will be on hand to field questions about rights, responsibilities, and the policies laid out in the Student Handbook.
11:15-12:15: "Scholarship of Teaching Initiatives at Xavier: Course Portfolios and Inquiry into Teaching and Learning"
Dr. Robert Berman and Dr. Paul Schafer of the Philosophy Department lead a hands-on workshop to give new faculty a taste of the the kind of collaborative investigation into teaching and learning that they will experience, should they elect to join one of the scholarship of teaching intitiatives.

Dr. Elizabeth A. Barron, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dr. Tuajuanda Jordan, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
3:00-3:30 Walking Tour of Campus (optional) Dr. Todd Stanislav, Associate Professor of Biology and CAT Director, leads new faculty on a tour that highlights key landmarks and offices.
