The Big, Hairy Assignment? Helping students do Rich and Relevant Research Writing
Ever wondered or worried about your students’ final papers? Can they search, curate, cite, argue and defend in ways that are academically and professionally appropriate? The reality is that many of students enter and venture through university with little to no experience and aptitude in critical research and analytical writing. In an effort to help address this, XCORE, in conjunction with Library Services, are pleased to offer a workshop dedicated to Research Writing. In this brief session, we will shift the onus from the student and place it upon us as faculty. Better student work requires effective pedagogical planning, especially as we introduce these concepts to our students through the core curriculum. Specifically, we expect to focus on three important aspects:
* Identify the research skills necessary for students in their course
* Distinguish between research requirements and expectations at different levels of the core (e.g. XCOR 1011/102 and XCOR 3010/3020)
* Build transparent opportunities throughout the semester to help students develop and refine skills necessary for effective research performance
Attendees are encouraged to bring a copy of their current research assignment with them, if possible, as you will have time to work on it during this session.
While the session uses core courses, it is open to ALL faculty. Come listen and learn from colleagues that are already involved in these efforts. We will provide the lunch if you can provide an assignment or idea you would like to further develop and refine. See you there!!
